What are the common specifications of polypropylene high-strength yarns? 840D, 1260D, 1680D. How to choose?

The meaning of specifications

In the market of polypropylene high-strength yarns, the D number is used as the core specification identifier. D represents denier, which is used to indicate the fineness of the yarn, and the larger the number, the thicker the single yarn bundle. 840D, 1260D, 1680D are all mainstream specifications widely used in the industry. Besides, there are other supporting specifications covering various needs from light load to heavy load.

Yarn fineness is directly related to the carrying capacity of the yarn bundle, the softness and hardness of the fabric, and the weaving characteristics. Yarn bundles with lower denier are finer and the finished fabric is lightweight and soft; yarn bundles with higher denier are thicker and have higher overall strength, and the fabric is thick and plump. Different specifications have different requirements for the tension of the loom, needle number, and winding parameters during weaving.

Three specification selection ideas

The 840D yarn bundle is relatively fine and has a soft hand. After weaving, the finished product is lightweight. It is suitable for products that are sensitive to self-weight and have moderate load requirements, such as thin fabric strips, small safety auxiliary ropes, luggage reinforcement belts, and lightweight geotextiles. Its advantage is smooth weaving, good flexibility of the finished product, and it is suitable for scenarios that require repeated bending and lightweight priority, but not suitable for long-term heavy load conditions.

1260D belongs to a balanced specification, combining strength and flexibility, and has the widest application range. It is the specification that most manufacturers keep in stock. It can be used for ordinary safety fabric strips, medium-tonnage ropes, geotextile base fabrics, lifting auxiliary belts, etc., balancing load-bearing and processing performance. The weaving difficulty is moderate, and it is the most commonly used specification in regular orders and also the preferred specification for samples.

1680D yarn bundle is thick, with higher strength reserves, and the woven fabric is thick and wear-resistant, with stronger impact resistance. It is mostly used in heavy-duty lifting belts, large-sized ropes, high-strength protective base fabrics, and engineering reinforcement fabrics, etc., for heavy-load scenarios. The disadvantage is that the finished product is relatively hard and has weak flexibility, and it is not suitable for products that require lightweight and soft characteristics. During weaving, higher tension requirements and wear-resistant accessories are needed for the equipment.

Selection cannot only be based on the D number, but also needs to be comprehensively judged based on the finished product structure, loading method, and usage environment. For polypropylene high-strength yarns of the same denier, the formulation and process are different, and the finished product performance also varies. Before purchasing, it is recommended to conduct sample weaving to confirm the hand feel, strength, and weaving stability, and then determine the final specification.
