How strong is the chemical resistance of polypropylene high-strength fibers?
Basic characteristics: resistant to most acids, bases, and salts
The molecular structure of polypropylene high-strength fibers is stable and lacks polar groups. They do not easily react with most acids, bases, and salts, and perform exceptionally well in a conventional chemical environment. Common dilute acids, dilute bases, and salt solutions are difficult to erode the fiber itself. Under long-term immersion, the fiber's strength and appearance are unlikely to show significant degradation. This is why it is often used in sewage filtration, chemical protection belts, and aquaculture net materials.
However, its tolerance range has boundaries and is not suitable for all chemicals. Strong oxidizing media can damage the molecular chains, causing the fibers to age, become brittle, and lose strength; some organic solvents can also cause swelling and change the fiber structure, affecting its performance. At the same time, the temperature of chemical media will amplify the impact. Under the same reagent, when the temperature increases, the erosion effect will significantly intensify.
Compare with similar fibers to see the advantages and disadvantages
Compare polypropylene high-strength fibers with polyester and nylon high-strength fibers. Polypropylene high-strength fibers have obvious advantages in acid-base salt resistance. Nylon is easily eroded by acids, and its strength decreases rapidly in an acidic environment; polyester can withstand acid well, but its alkali resistance is weak, and it will gradually hydrolyze in an alkaline environment. Polypropylene is more stable in such conditions and is suitable for scenarios where it needs to be in contact with sewage and salt-containing liquids for a long time.
The shortcomings are also obvious. It is not resistant to strong oxidizing agents, has average heat resistance, and its tolerance in high-temperature chemical environments is greatly reduced. In addition, polypropylene is difficult to dye, and most are dyed from the original liquid. Some color mother systems may have the possibility of pigment migration and fading in specific chemical media. When purchasing, it is necessary to simultaneously evaluate the chemical stability of the dyeing system.
When selecting, do not simply assume that polypropylene high-strength fibers are resistant to all chemicals. It is necessary to clearly identify the types, concentrations, and usage temperatures of the media they will come into contact with. If conditions permit, conduct soaking tests in advance to observe changes in strength, appearance, and color. In a conventional acid-base, salt water environment, it is a cost-effective choice; for scenarios involving strong oxidants and specific organic solvents, it is necessary to carefully evaluate or replace with other fibers.
