Why does polypropylene hollow filament provide warmth while being lightweight? The principle is explained in this article.
The hollow structure traps stationary air.
The core of warmth lies in the retention of air. The interior of the polypropylene hollow filament contains continuous hollow cavities. After forming, the cavities will seal in a large amount of stationary air. Air itself has a relatively weak heat-conducting property, and when it is enclosed within the fiber, it is less likely to form convection, which can slow down the heat conduction and loss, reducing the loss of body heat and achieving the effect of warmth retention.
Unlike solid fibers that only rely on the fiber gaps to store heat, the hollow filament has its own storage space for air within the fiber itself. Under the same conditions, it can accommodate more stationary air, providing a better insulation foundation. At the same time, the cavity structure allows the interior of the fiber to no longer be completely filled with polymer raw materials, directly reducing the material usage per single fiber, which is also the key source of its lightweight.
The characteristics of the base material enhance the light and warm performance.
The polypropylene base material itself has a low density, and the raw material properties inherently have a lightweight advantage. Combined with the hollow structure, it can reduce the burden twice over. The finished fabric and filling material can achieve a lighter overall weight, reducing the burden when worn or filled.
In addition, polypropylene itself is hydrophobic and does not easily absorb moisture. If the fiber gets wet, the moisture will occupy the air space, increasing the heat-conducting speed, and the warmth retention will decrease. The hollow polypropylene filament is not prone to storing water and can maintain stable air inside the cavity for a long time, so the insulation performance is not easily affected by moisture.
After being processed into fluff pieces or filling materials, a large number of hollow fibers are stacked on top of each other, and secondary air layers will form between the fibers. The multiple layers of stationary air will be stacked together, further enhancing the overall insulation performance.
Overall, the hollow cavities are responsible for locking in air and reducing heat transfer, while also reducing the amount of raw materials used; the polypropylene base material itself is lightweight and hydrophobic, ensuring a light feel and stable warmth performance. Together, they create the characteristics of the polypropylene hollow filament being light and warm. It is often used in household filling, outdoor insulation fabrics, etc., suitable for products that require both weight and insulation.
