Polypropylene filament, also known as polypropylene fiber, is a synthetic fiber made from propylene, a by-product of petroleum refining, through processes such as polymerization and melt spinning. As a widely used variety among synthetic fibers, it plays a significant role in multiple fields due to its abundant raw material sources and simple production process, and has become a common material in industrial production and daily life.


Core performance characteristics


The density of polypropylene filament is between 0.90 and 0.92g/cm³, making it one of the lighter types of common chemical fibers. Its dry strength and wet strength are basically the same, with stable strength performance. The strength of short fibers can reach 35-53 CN /tex, and can be further enhanced after special process treatment.


It has extremely low hygroscopicity, with a moisture regain rate close to zero under normal conditions. However, it has outstanding core absorption capacity, which can quickly transfer water vapor and keep the fabric dry. Meanwhile, polypropylene filament has good chemical resistance. Except for strong corrosive substances such as concentrated nitric acid and concentrated caustic soda, it has a relatively good resistance to most acids and alkalis. However, its light resistance and thermal stability are relatively weak, and it is prone to aging. Usually, its performance needs to be improved by adding anti-aging agents and other means.

The variety of Polypropylene filament is rich, including undeformed filament, expanded deformed filament, short fiber, hollow fiber, shaped fiber and many other types. In industry, processes such as melt spinning, membrane splitting spinning, and expanded spinning are commonly used for production. During the spinning process, the temperature must be strictly controlled to ensure the quality of fiber formation.


In response to the problem of difficult dyeing, the industry mostly adopts the melt coloring method. By uniformly mixing pigments with polypropylene polymers and then melting and spinning, colored fibers with higher color fastness can be obtained. Polar groups can also be introduced into the fiber macromolecules through copolymerization modification to adapt to conventional dyeing processes.

In the industrial field, Polypropylene filament is often used to make ropes, fishing nets, filter cloths, geotextiles, etc. With its high strength and corrosion resistance, it meets the demands of industrial production and engineering construction. In the field of decoration, it can be processed into carpets, sofa covers, wall coverings, etc., and has the advantages of being easy to wash and having good resilience.


In the field of clothing, polypropylene filament can be blended with other fibers to make shirts, sportswear, socks, etc. The thermal quilts made of superfine polypropylene fibers are light in weight and have excellent thermal insulation. In addition, it is widely used in disposable hygiene products, packaging materials, cable sheaths and other products, meeting diverse usage requirements.
